Machining

We are a large contract machining and assembly facility located in Erie, Pennsylvania.
You can expect engineering expertise, trusted quality, and rapid delivery.

CNC Machining

CNC Machining

Modern has one FMC line with four Horizontal Machining centers. These machines have a 630mm pallet system and automated loading rail system. There are a total of twenty pallet holding stations.

Swiss CNC Machining

Swiss CNC Machining

Our machining capabilities now include Swiss CNC machining.
Our new Swiss Tsugami B0326-II CNC machine offers production flexibility, a reduction in material costs and the ability to quickly changeover tooling in order to reduce machine time.

Welding

Welding

Modern Industries Precision Machining & Assembly Division can prepare fabrications & assemblies of several types, sizes and configurations that combine parts we machine with other customer-provided parts such as stampings or forgings.

Grinding

Grinding

Modern’s Precision Machining & Assembly Division operates CNC grinders, Double Disk Grinders, Centerless Grinders, Blanchard Grinders, and numerous other grinders. We can accomplish many grinding processes required to part finishing. If we don’t have the particular grinding process you need, just tell us and we will consider adding this process.

Materials

Modern Industries possesses extensive experience machining the following materials:
ALUMINUM, STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL, CASTINGS & FORGINGS

Assembly and Contract Manufacturing

Modern Industries Precision Machining & Assembly Division has prepared fabrications and assemblies for customers across a broad range of industries. Using our capabilities to prepare finished assemblies provides our customers with the ability to instantly expand production output without the need to hire or invest in added facilities.

Production Planning and Inventory Control

Modern Industries has had an ERP System for many years and it was last updated in 2012. We use the Vantage ERP/MRP System, which is considered the best system to integrate with customer’s supply chain and inventory management.

East Wing

Flexible Machining System

Modern’s high volume CNC machining includes one FMC line with four Horizontal Machining centers. These machines have a 630mm pallet system and automated loading rail system. There are a total of twenty pallet holding stations.

Horizontal Machining Centers

There are sixteen horizontals with pallet sizes that cover the ranges of 400mm, 500mm and 630mm pallets.

Vertical Machining Centers

South WingOur high volume CNC machining capabilities include singe spindle and dual spindle machines that are designed for production and repetition. There are a total of nine spindles with automatic pallet changers.

CMM’s (Coordinate Measuring Machines)

Our inspection department uses the CMM’s in-process and final inspections as well as first articles, PPAP and capability studies. There are four CMM’s available at any one time allowing efficient operations that minimize machine downtime associated with this inspection operation.

CNC Turning Centers

Modern has a wide complement of lathes that include vertical as well as horizontals, dual spindle verticals and dual spindle horizontals. The dual spindle lathes all have free-loading pallets that are designed for speed and productivity. The single spindle machines are best suited for smaller lots and short runs. Sizes range up to 17 inches for the horizontals and up to 24 inches for the vertical machines.

CNC Cylindrical Grinding

Modern has a joint venture relationship with a grinding house. They have proven to be very capable and competitive in a number of projects we have jointly developed. When production volume grows to the point that the hours of grinding equates to 1-1/2 shifts, Modern will purchase this equipment from our grinding partner.

Support Processes and Conventional Machining

North WingCNC machining is not always the best answer for every application. Often the most economical manufacturing approach is the simplest approach. While we have many CNC machines, we have many other support and conventional processes and equipment which include:

  • Double disk grinding
  • Blanchard grinding
  • Cylindrical grinding
  • Centerless grinding
  • Broaching
  • Lapping
  • Welding – TIG, MIG and structural
  • Assembly
  • Ultrasonic testing
  • Heat treating and thermal processing
  • Leak testing – pressure decay method is predominantly used
  • Special cleaning – high flood and pressure wash, sandblasting, pickle and rinse
  • Plating – there are two commercial platers on each side of Modern Industries
  • Heat treating and thermal processing
  • Mechanical destructive testing
  • Chemical composition testing
  • Failure analysis
  • MPI magnetic and Zyglo Penetrant inspections
