Modern Industries offersParts Post-Cryo cryogenics and deep freezing services designed to refine the structure of metal parts to produce a wide range of benefits among numerous industrial applications. Primarily, this treatment is designed to increase longevity in metal components by reducing the impact of part wear and fatigue over time after altering the molecular structure of the component. Take a closer look at how Modern Industries can offer high-quality cryogenics and deep freezing services that are customizable to your needs and project specifications.

How Our Cryogenics and Deep Freezing Services Work

To carry out our cryogenics services, we treat metals to temperatures as low as -300 ℉. The freezing process is gradual, as the goal is to get the molecular structure of the material to become tightly compressed without over-stressing the internal matrix of the metal. Our advanced computer monitoring technology allows us to carry out this process with extensive automation that slowly decreases temperatures over time.

The exact specifications around the temperature decrease, holding period, and temperature increase will vary based on the end goal of the treatment. For example, some cryogenic treatments are designed to change a material’s tensile strength while others prioritize toughness or ductility.

Typically, cryogenic treatments are done over several days with ramp-down times that often range from 4 to 10 hours until the desired temperature is reached. Once the desired temperature is attained, the part is then held at that temperature for 20 to 30 hours. The material is gently brought back to room temperature over an additional 10 to 20 hours. Note that this can vary depending on the type and weight of material undergoing cryogenic treatment, and the whole process ranges from approximately 36 to 74 hours. Our expert team of engineers has extensive experience in cryogenics and can offer the right solution for your job’s unique needs.

Properties Created by Cryogenic Treatments

Cryogenics and deep freezing treatments can create changes in materials suitable for a range of varying applications. Plus, it functions as an added value to heat treatment, so you don’t have to choose one over the other. Cryogenic treatments are often beneficial when used in addition to other heat treatment options. In addition to typical benefits afforded by traditional heat-treating services, customers can experience the following benefits from our cryogenic services depending on their needs.

Molecular Grain Structure Refinement

The heat treatment process is used to improve the grain structure of the material. In steel treatment specifically, heat treatment converts austenite crystal into martensite. Heat treatment alone doesn’t turn all the austenite crystals into martensite, however, so heat treatment processes have an allowable percentage of austenite in the final result. Deep freezing helps reduce the amount of austenite further, which refines the molecular grain structure. Doing so helps eliminate any imperfections in the microstructure and delivers incredible strength and durability.

Stress Relief

All metals undergo stress during the manufacturing process. From the point that molten metal hardens into its base solid phase even as raw stock, it undergoes stress as it cools to create dendrites or crystal imperfections in the material. Heat treatments help modify the metal’s properties, but even that can create additional stresses, especially when further modified by machining processes. Cryogenic treatments can help address the residual stresses that lead to metal fatigue, which can limit the propagation of cracks and increase the overall lifespan of the metal.

Enhanced Wear Resistance

When cryogenic treatments are applied to alloys like steel, it enhances the material’s overall wear resistance by forming more eta-carbide particles. These particles form in the typical steel manufacturing process, which is partly why steel is so wear-resistant compared to iron, but deep freezing causes additional eta-carbide particles to form. These particles are directly related to the toughness of the material, so wear resistance increases with cryogenics.
