Hydraulic Shock Absorbers

  • How Does Work

  • Benefits and Applications
  • Why Choose Us

Modern Industries’ hydraulic shock absorbers allow you to control motion where you need it most. Our line of self-contained hydraulic shock absorbers comes with many years of field-proven design reliability and consistent operations. There’s no need for external attachments or power sources, and the sleek design controls noise, vibration, impact, and motion.

Modern Industries’ hydraulic shock absorbers are precisely engineered to provide longer machine life, reduce structural fatigue, and reduce premature failures. Our vast product line offers solutions to fit the needs of most customers, and our quality has been proven with over 70 years of manufacturing operations.

When selecting the right shock absorber for any application, it’s important to understand how these products work and the available types. Here you’ll learn about these different types as well as the benefits and applications of each option in our product line.

How Does a Hydraulic Shock Absorber Work?

Hydraulic shock absorbers operate using the principle of converting kinetic energy, or movement, into thermal energy. The shock absorber’s fluid is forced through restricted valve systems and outlets, causing hydraulic resistance.

The hydraulic shock absorber captures and controls the load when it meets the shock, and then the stroke slowly decelerates the load. An appropriately sized shock absorber will be able to easily “catch” the load and “control” it until the shock’s stroke ceases. Throughout the stroke, the mass’s velocity sees a gradual reduction until the stroke stops entirely.

You can tell that the shock absorber is functioning properly when the mass remains constant at the beginning and end of the stroke. A bounce at the beginning or end could indicate a poorly adjusted or incorrect shock absorber. The shock absorber should facilitate a constant reaction force across the entire stroke.

Types of Hydraulic Shock Absorbers

There are three main types of hydraulic shock absorbers that you can use for various applications.

  • Hydraulic Rotary Shock Absorbers These shock absorber designs comprise a cylindrical body filled with oil, along with an attached chassis that operates the shock using a lever action arm. Our rotary shock absorbers can hold up under significant pressure. The absorber’s arms feature multiple standard sizes, but we can also develop a custom solution based on your unique requirements.
  • Bumper Shock Absorbers The bumper shock absorber design uses an oil-based shock that converts received kinetic energy on one end into another form of dissipated energy on the other. Like our other shock absorber designs, our bumper shock absorbers can withstand high pressure levels and come with a lifetime quality guarantee.
  • Linear Shock Absorbers (Dashpot) These shock absorbers feature a shock and a damper that rely on viscous friction to resist motion. The force generated by the absorbers equals the velocity, but the force flows in the opposite direction to absorb energy and decelerate the motion. Similar to our other absorber designs, our linear shock absorbers withstand significant pressure and come with a lifetime quality guarantee.
